‘What We Do For Two Shillings’

Event Details

Shops and businesses in the Brockley Road, 1880-1939. Crofton Park’s rapid growth in the late 1800s brought new shops, selling an extraordinary range of goods and services. New industries and businesses employed thousands of people, creating a thriving local economy. In this talk, we’ll find out about ostrich-feather cleaners, tennis-racquet stringers, germ-free cows, and the latest in phone technology; there are factories and street traders, and a plethora of businesses run from homes. Not forgetting complaints about public transport. Nothing new… This illustrated talk will be by Carol Harris of the Crofton Park History Group.
