Brockley Max launches fundraising campaign

Brockley Max has launched a fundraising campaign aimed at securing the well-loved festival’s future. Since forming 19 years ago the Brockley Max Festival has taken a corner of south-east London each June for a nine-day run. Brockley Max, run mostly by volunteers, started with just 12 events in 2001, and has expanded each year.

In 2019 there were nearly 90 events over the course of the nine days of the festival, ranging from music, poetry, theatre, film and photo exhibitions to talks, walks and workshops. It’s become both so successful and so integral to those of us who live and work in Brockley, Crofton Park, Honor Oak and Ladywell because it’s so community-led. Brockley Max relies on people volunteering their time to perform, sell raffle tickets, host events, and attend the plethora of different activities.

Now, however, the festival is under threat because Lewisham Council is no longer able to pledge funds towards it. However, due to its central role in the calendar of our local community, we’re hopeful it will be able to continue.

Our crowdfunding campaign, launched on Halloween, is hoping to raise £6,500 to make sure that the 2020 festival can take place. As part of the launch a spooky storytelling event, Frightful Yarns, took place with local writers coming together to unnerve the 50-strong audience in attendance.

“Brockley Max is a fantastic festival that is much loved by local community.
The ‘£6500 we are hoping to raise through GoFundMe will enable this great festival to continue,” explains Moira Tait, Festival Director.Over the next five months there will be a series of fundraising events, all of which will be connected to the main festival in some way. We hope you’ll be able to attend these special, volunteer-run events and pledge your support for our festival. If you would like to help please donate at
